Sectional preview - boys

Monday September 30, 2013

Schools changing class levels caused some shuffling in the sectionals. AlmanacSports looks at the new pairings as the regular season comes to an end.

Sectional 31 - North

The sectional of death just got more lethal. #18 Jasper joins this group comprising 4 of the top 5 local teams (See the Almanac-8 poll). Hosts North knocked off Castle in OT last year to win, but the Huskies must get past the Wildcats first. In the top half of the bracket, Washington faces Big 8 opponent Boonville.

Sectional 32 - Harrison (Evansville)

Central moved into this sectional pushing the total to six. #3 Memorial has to be the favorite, outscoring three of these teams 31-0. The only teams with a real chance of upsetting the Tigers are Central and maybe Harrison.

Sectional 61 - North Knox

The exact same pairings as last year saw Sullivan tip South Knox in OT, but this year looks wide open with most teams playing close. Home team North Knox, who started hot but have cooled lately, could be a dark horse to win the sectional.

Sectional 62 - NE Dubois

Wood Memorial and Pike Central swap with Forest Park. With last year's winners out, #12 Washington Catholic have to be the favorites even with the Cadinals having a down year.

Sectional 63 - Heritage Hills

Forest Park replace Mater Dei and Day in this sectional (numbered #64 last year). The Rangers are the strongest in the pool, but hosts Heritage Hills only lost 1-2 to PAC rivals back in August. This one could be close!

Sectional 64 - Gibson Southern

Mater Dei and Day School shift to this sectional replacing Pike Central and Wood Memorial. Ranked teams #7 Mater Dei and #8 Gibson Southern have the firepower to win. In what was once a tough regional showdown, the likely Titans-Wildcats sectional championship will happen sooner.

AlmanacSports.com Pick: Gibson Southern over Mater Dei

Sectional 29 TH North - Vincennes remains in the Terre Haute sectional, but after a rebuilding year the Alices would be hard pressed to defend their sectional title.
