Girls sectional winners look to regionals

Wednesday October 15, 2014

This year AlmanacSports correctly predicted 4 out of 5 sectionals, earning a pat on the back. Never underestimate Castle, however, winners of 3 titles in a row, who messed up our Castle sectional. Congratulations to all the sectional winners including newcomers Pike Central!

Jasper Regional

#15AA Memorial beat #20AA Reitz avenging a 2-1 loss last month. The Tigers, who generally hit their stride during the post-season, nabbed their 4th sectional in a row. They now face Providence in a bid to return to semi-state and are looking for a 2nd state title in 3 years.

Castle repeated as sectional champs (4 in 5 years) first by beating a strong Jasper team. #9AA North lost its first game the hard way in the championship game to the Knights 1-0. Castle now moves on to regionals to face Terre Haute North, whom they beat 1-0 earlier this year. A possible regional final rematch with Memorial looms, though the Knights haven't made it to semi-state since 2010.

Heritage Hills and Evansville Regionals

Favorites #3A Heritage Hills walked through its sectional this year having been upset last year in the same position. They will play #1A Lawrenceburg in what has the makings of a state final, though it should be noted the Patriots have yet to advance beyond regionals.

Pike Central won its first ever sectional squeaking by Sullivan, whom they lost to earlier in the year. The Chargers now have the monumental task of facing #4A Mater Dei in the opening round of regionals.

Mater Dei denied #17A Gisbon Southern its chance to return to state in a rain delayed game Monday. The two tied earlier this year so it was a no-brainer that one goal would decide the sectional champs. A 1-0 victory makes 4 sectionals in 5 years for the Wildcats, though they have yet to advance past regionals. This could be their lucky year, and a possible matchup against local opponents Heritage Hills would be an exciting game with a trip to state on the line.
