Daviess County Football History

There has been football in Daviess County since the early 1900s, when the Hatchets of Washington High School fielded a squad. The school discontinued the sport around 1911 "after several local players suffered injuries, and public sentiment was turned against the sport," according to the Sep. 6 Evansville Sunday Courier & Journal, but was reinstated in 1936 and has continued until today.

  • North Daviess High School (1971 to present)
  • Washington High School (~1907 to 1911, 1936 to present)

The first game between North Daviess and Washington was in 1972, but a 46-0 win that year and a 53-0 win the next for the Hatchets ensured that the rivalry would lay dormant for another thirty years. The series was renewed in 2003 and is now played for the Highway 57 Helmet Traveling Trophy.
