Class 3A History

1973 - IHSAA establishes Class 3A Football Championship Tournament; teams divided into four regions, with each regional winner advancing to playoffs for a total of four teams; teams qualified using a points system
1976
- The championship expanded to include the top two teams from each region, bringing the total to eight.
1981
- The championship expanded to include the top four teams from each region, bringing the total to sixteen.
1983
- altered the way teams qualified; teams now divided into sixteen districts, with each district winner advancing to playoffs
1985
- teams now divided into eight sectionals, with all teams advancing into playoffs
